Detroit Chapter June 2018 Issue

Posted: 4/2/2018
Our February lunch at Beau’s restaurant was a lot of fun with several of our newer members and one brand new member, Elaine Stolhammer ’11 a former Marine.
In March lunch in Ann Arbor at Guy Hollerin’s was great with a chance to see Jim Bianchi ’81 who has not been able to make it for awhile.  We have all been saddened by the passing of RADM Lee Landes USNR (Ret) at the age of 93.  He was not an alum, but he worked constantly for many groups and charities in the Detroit area.  He was a real mover and shaker.  He specifically helped our chapter raise part of the $25,000 that we donated to the Alumni Hall fund raising effort with a performance of the “Unsinkable Molly Brown” at the Fisher Theater.

At Beau’s Restaurant standing from left, Louise Graham ’99, Elaine Stolhammer ’11, Mike Johnson ’79, seated from left, Dave Ciha ’03, Marya Davis ’85, Joe Zane ’07.

At Guy Hollerin’s in Ann Arbor standing from left, Jim Fleming ’66, Art Bryant ’66, seated from left, Jim Bianchi ’81, Max Presecan ’68.

We had a very nice holiday lunch at The Dearborn Inn on Dec. 18.  We welcomed new members Graham Sloan ’97 and his wife Louise Sloan ’99 who had attended a month ago at Beau’s.  A lot of info was exchanged about the Detroit Area, everything from pot holes to great sports to opera to living due North of Canada.  (Yes, some of us do.)
We had a larger gathering at the Clawson Steakhouse on Jan 29 due to Graham Sloan ’97 putting the word out to a number of people at General Motors.  We were happy to meet Robert Reagan ’07 and Michael Bearman ’11 who work for GM in Warren and David Albritton ’88 who has an office in The RenCen, but lives in Virginia.  The weather was bad so a few others couldn’t make it. We were also joined by LT Clayton Young ’12 who works in the Office of Admissions at USNA and is the  Chicago/Detroit Admissions Counselor.

Shipmate Chapter News

The outcome of the Army-Navy game was exciting but not pretty for us. We will be back next year and BEAT ARMY! That being said we had a great party with our Woo Poo friends at Ward and Michele Bryant’s home in Troy MI. It’s a great party house and well located. I did not get a good picture of the Pickle Barrel exchange, but we will have a good one when we win it back next year. Enjoy the pictures. I think we got almost everyone except Heather and Vivian Zane, Sonja Bennett, Lynne Bryant and Annette Poxon.

Watching intently from left, Jim Suhay USMA ’66, his high school friend Jim Fleming ’66, Chris Bernard ’88, an Army wife, Mike Casey ’70, David Ciha ’03 Mike Johnson ’79, and Marguerite Johnson and an Army guy in back.

Army Navy Update

Posted: 10/31/2017

Detroit Alumni,

Well, Navy’s record of 5 and 2 is pretty good, but the last 2 loses were hard to take.  However, we have beaten Air Force, we only need one win to be bowl eligible, and a win over Army would get us the Commander-in-Chief’s trophy.  With that in mind, the attached flyer (YOU ARE INVITED TO THE MICHIGAN EDITION 2017) has all the details for this year’s game party much like two years ago.  Get your reservations in early.

Also, I want to thank the following members for sending in local dues for this year, and remind others to send them in.  Please send dues check for $20 made out to USNAAA-Detroit Chapter to Art Bryant; 1811 Hollywood; Grosse Pointe Woods MI 48236.

October Lunch and Update

Posted: 10/11/2017

Detroit Alumni,

Navy is 5 and 0 so far this season and last weeks win against Air Force was incredible!!  After a big Navy lead and a big Air Force come back it was a see-saw battle with Navy behind and starting a final drive with 1 min and 43 sec left and scoring the winning TD with 15 sec. left.  Definitely a game to remember.  Navy is now ranked 25 in the AP Poll and 24 in the Coaches Poll.

Our lunch this month will be at Beau’s Restaurant on Wednesday, October 18 at 1145.  NOTE THE SLIGHT TIME CHANGE 1145.  Beau’s does not unlock the door until at least 1130.  The extra 15 min. is so we aren’t standing outside waiting. Beau’s is located at 4108 West Maple, Bloomfield Hills 48301, just west of Telegraph.

Don’t forget dues payments of $20 for 2017.  Send check for $20 made out to USNAAA-Detroit Chapter to Art Bryant, 1811 Hollywood, Grosse Pointe Woods MI 48236.
