Detroit Chapter News for March 2020

We had a great Army-Navy Game Party, and we certainly enjoyed the score of 31 to 7 with Navy on top.  No need for more verbiage.  Enjoy the pictures.  Sorry we missed a bunch of you in the pictures.

GREAT GAME, Jan. date error & Thursday lunch

Posted: 12/16/2019

Detroit Alumni,

What a great 120th game Saturday!!  Army looked like they might do it again in the first quarter.  After that it was all Navy led by the great QB Malcolm Perry ’20!   Final score was Navy 31- Army 7.  Navy is 10 and 2 with a bowl game to go.   The total won lost record is now Navy 61 wins, 52 losses and 7 ties.
CORRECTION:
In the last schedule we sent, I listed the date wrong for the Jan lunch as the 19th.  It should have said:  Jan 9       Clawson Steakhouse in Clawson
Hope to see you this Thursday for lunch at Mack Ave Grille to talk about the game.  19841 Mack in Grosse Pointe Woods 48236 at 11:30.

October News and Update

Posted: 10/14/2019

Detroit Alumni,

NAVY FOOTBALL:

Navy just defeated Tulsa 45-17 to make their record 4-1.  That’s after a very exciting win over Air Force last week.  The Air Force game was much closer than the score of 34-25 would indicate.  With Navy leading by 3 points, Air Force with the ball and seconds left, Navy scooped up a fumble and scored.  What a way to seal the Win!!

ARMY- NAVY GAME PARTY:

The info on our Army-Navy game party will be out very soon!  I can tell you this.  The game will be at 3:00 pm on Sat. December 14, and it will probably be at Buffalo Will Wings on Sixteen Mile in Troy.

OCTOBER LUNCH:

Due to our old location in Ann Arbor being closed at lunch time now, we have a new Ann Arbor location.  It will be at Carson’s American Bistro at 2000 Commonwealth Blvd., Ann Arbor MI 48105 on Tuesday, October 22 at 11:30 am.  This location is less than a quarter of a mile west of our old location.  Although the address is on Commonwealth, you can enter it from Plymouth Rd.  As usual, please email with an RSVP if possible, but last minute arrivals are fine.

LAST MONTH’S LUNCH:

We had a nice crowd of 16 for our thank you lunch for Mike Bennett and Joe Walsh for their many years of service as B&G Area Coordinators.  Now it is Mike Johnson’s turn.

Good luck, Mike.

June Lunch & All-Academy Challenge

Posted: 6/3/2019

For the next few days May 30 through June 3 is the 6th annual All Academy Challenge pitting the Naval Academy, West Point, Air force Academy, Coast Guard Academy and Merchant Marine Academy against each other to raise money, but more important number of participants.  All it takes is $5 minimum.  Go to navy.allacademychallenge.com and give just a little or give a lot.  Now here is the part that is so disgusting I can’t believe I am saying it.  If you donate any amount, even $5, you can take $5 off your local dues if you send it in by June 30.  I HATE this kind of advertising, but I can’t resist doing it!!

This Month’s lunch will be at an East side location at 11:30 am on Tuesday, June 11 at Sindbad’s Restaurant and Marina.  It is to make things a little closer for those on the East side and in downtown Detroit.  Sindbad’s is located at 100 St Clair St; Detroit 48214. It is off Jefferson on the Detroit River about half way between East Grand Blvd and Conner.  Please email for a reservation to arthurwbryant@gmail.com  if you can attend, but it is not necessary.  Good weather should make it a nice day to watch the boats on the river.

April Lunch Meeting

Posted: 4/3/2019

Detroit Alumni,

First off I am sorry to have to report the death of Joe Bellino ’61, great halfback for Navy and its first Heisman Trophy winner.  His bio can be found by searching in the Boston Globe.  When he was a second class he turned down an offer to play pro baseball and retured to Navy for his first class year when he won the Heisman.  He was a really class guy.  He retired as a Captain after 28 years in the Navy and Naval Reserve.
It is time to start collecting chapter dues of $20 for 2019.  Please make checks out to USNAAA-Detroit Chapter and mail to USNAAA-Detroit Chapter c/o Art Bryant, 1811 Hollywood, Grosse Pointe Woods, 48236.  Thanks to the following four alumni who have already paid up for 2019:
Mark Petroff ’90
Charles Schott ’85
Bill Pine ’72
Mike Droogleever ’05
Our lunch this month will be on Thursday, April 18 at Guy Hollerin’s Sports Bar in the Holiday Inn at Plymouth Rd and Hwy 23 in Ann Arbor at 1130.  If you can please email back for a reservation or call me at 313-885-2174.  Last minute attendees are always welcome.
